How to Research a Local Market Before Launching a Business
Before you sign a lease or commit capital, validate your market. Here is the data-driven research framework.
Why Pre-Launch Research Matters
30% of new businesses fail within 2 years. Half of those failures trace back to bad market choice. An afternoon of research can save years of mistakes.
The 5-Step Framework
Step 1: Count competitors. Search "[your business type] in [target area]" and count results.
Step 2: Check ratings. Average competitor rating tells you the standard you need to beat.
Step 3: Find gaps. Look for under-served niches or low-rated competitors.
Step 4: Map density. Where are competitors clustered? Where are gaps?
Step 5: Validate demand. Review counts indicate customer activity.
Sample Research Workflow
Opening a coffee shop in Austin? Search "coffee shops in Austin" — find 200. Filter by neighbourhood — find areas with 5 vs 30. Check ratings — average 4.2. Your standard: 4.5+ to stand out.
